Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
Psalms 127:1 KJV
The meaning is,. People build a house for shelter, protection from outside forces. The most deadly threats in this world are not natural, not flesh and blood, they are spiritual forces (Eph.6:10ff). Only the power God can overcome those evil forces.
But how can a family secure God as their contractor? Is this Psalm just creative writing?
The Lord is the builder when the architectural plans, building materials and furnishings are his and not from worldly sources.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. –Matthew 7:21-27 KJV
What about divorce in Christian homes?
To protect the PEACE and SECURITY of the home the Lord has built, he will cause a division.
“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but A SWORD. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. –Matthew 10:34-36 KJV
“But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be PLEASED to dwell with him [in peace and unity], let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her [in peace and unity], let her not leave him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified [blessed, holy] by the husband: else were your children [God’s heritage from the union] unclean; but now are they holy. BUT if the unbelieving DEPART [from the home God oversees], let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage [in marriage to the unbeliever] in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. –1 Corinthians 7:12-15 KJV
God’s will is peaceful households where his children live. Throughout the Old Testament the households of believing individuals were protected from evil.
